Although it may seem mysterious or complicated, a standard is simply a set of specifications for a product or device. Devices that follow a specific standard share operating characteristics, such as distance or range limitations and maximum data transfer speed.

802.xx (aka Wi-Fi) is a family of networking specifications developed by a working group of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). The following table identifies 802.xx specifications and provides a comprehensive comparison of each standard.
